Flood Insurance

We’ve all seen the flood stories on the news. Places that have never even seen rising waters have experienced flooding lately. That’s because anywhere it rains, it can flood.

Let’s be clear though. We’re not talking about flooding caused by the back up of sewer or drains – that’s different. We’re talking about massive amounts of water or mudflow that overtake your home because of excessive rains, melting snow, broken levees, etc. Every home is at risk for some form of flooding. Thankfully, flood insurance is available in most areas. In fact, there is even a Preferred Risk Program for properties in low to moderate flood risk areas with substantially lower rates. If you live in certain flood plains, flood insurance may be required by your mortgagee. Flood insurance and coverage for water backup of sewers or drains are not covered under standard homeowners policies, but can be purchased separately or added by endorsement.

What does flood insurance cover?

A flood policy will cover direct losses from a flood, flood related erosion (usually caused by unusually high water currents, severe storm or flash flood), or overflow of water or mud. Coverage for dwellings and contents is available.

Where can I get flood insurance?

Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) if your community joins NFIP and agrees to adopt and enforce Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirements to reduce flooding. Contact David R Murray & Associates Inc for a quote on flood insurance. There is a 30-day waiting period for the inception of a new flood policy, except in the case of a new home purchase.
